The indicator measures the number of people who applied for unemployment benefits for the first time during the last week. This data is collected by the Department of Labor and published in a weekly report. The number of applications for benefits is used to measure the state of the labor market, as an increase means fewer people are hiring. It is expected that the figure will slightly decrease from 787K to 780K.
